The National Instruments PCI-1588 (Part Number: 779497-01) is a highly precise IEEE 1588-compatible synchronization device designed to establish accurate timing of events and clocks in multiple applications. Utilizing the IEEE 1588-2002 protocol, the device can function as either an IEEE 1588 master or slave clock. It features an integrated FPGA that automatically adjusts the phase and frequency of its built-in IEEE 1588 clock, ensuring optimal synchronization performance. The PCI-1588 delivers an output frequency range of DC to 1 MHz, with a minimum pulse width of 36 ns, and requires one PCI slot for installation.

With an onboard Ethernet port, the PCI-1588 easily synchronizes with other IEEE 1588-compatible devices, as well as traditional instruments like PLCs via SMB connectors. For synchronization within the same host machine, users can leverage the RTSI bus. The front panel is equipped with an RJ-45 Ethernet connector, three Programmable Function Interface (PFI) connectors (PFI0, PFI1, and PFI2), a link LED, and a speed LED to provide clear status indications. This device is capable of achieving sub-microsecond synchronization and can also timestamp incoming signals. It intelligently negotiates the best Ethernet speed, supporting both 10 and 100 Mbps.

The PCI-1588 is operated using the NI-Sync driver software, providing seamless integration with application development environments such as LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and Visual C/C++. The dimensions of the device are 6.87 x 4.19 inches, with a recommended operating temperature range of 0 to 55 °C and a storage range of -20 to 70 °C.
