The National Instruments 779176-01, also referred to as the PXI-5412, is a high-performance PXI waveform generator designed for versatile signal generation applications. With a maximum frequency of 20 MHz, this device can produce a variety of standard waveforms, including sine, square, triangle, and ramp signals, as well as custom user-defined waveforms. Utilizing direct digital synthesis (DDS) technology, the PXI-5412 delivers precise waveform outputs within an amplitude range of -6 V to +6 V. The compact 1-slot 3U PXI module features a 14-bit resolution and operates at a sampling rate of 100 MS/s while offering up to 256 MB of onboard memory.
The PXI-5412 stands out for its rapid waveform downloads, achieving speeds of up to 84 MB/s through a PCI bus interface, surpassing traditional GPIB-based instruments. Its architecture incorporates the Synchronization and Memory Core (SMC), facilitating synchronization with digitizers and other waveform generators or analyzers for mixed-signal test systems. Additionally, users can synchronize multiple units with a module-to-module skew of less than 500 ps using T-Clock technology, enabling phase-coherent multi-channel generation.
The device employs digital interpolation to enhance output quality by shifting reconstruction images to higher frequencies, which reduces analog filter distortion and improves passband flatness and image rejection, ensuring low-distortion signal outputs. For applications requiring sharp transitions, interpolation and analog filtering can be disabled to facilitate square wave and pulse generation with minimal aberrations.
The PXI-5412 supports four trigger modes—single, continuous, burst, and stepped—allowing for sophisticated waveform sequencing, and it can store multiple sequences and associated waveforms in its onboard memory to streamline testing processes. Its high-precision sample clock provides a sample rate resolution of 1.06 μHz, ensuring excellent stability and flexibility. The module can also phase lock to an external reference clock from multiple sources.
To ease integration and development, the 779176-01 is supported by the NI-FGEN driver, which is compatible with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, VisualBasic, and Visual C/C++. A user-friendly soft front panel and a variety of example programs further enhance the development experience. Notably, the PXI-5412 is also compatible with the LabVIEW Real-Time Module, making it suitable for high-reliability applications.
