The National Instruments 780109-01, also known as the PXIe-5442, is a high-performance, single-channel arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) engineered for sophisticated signal generation applications. This module boasts a 16-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a maximum sample rate of 100 MS/s, facilitating the precise creation of various complex waveforms. It features a digital upconverter (DUC) that enables direct generation of intermediate frequency (IF) signals, thereby streamlining the signal chain in communication systems.

The generator supports two output paths: the Direct path, optimized for IF applications with full-scale voltages ranging from 0.707 Vpk-pk to 1.00 Vpk-pk into a 50 Ω load, and the Main path, which accommodates a broader voltage range from 5.64 mVpk-pk to 2.00 Vpk-pk. The output impedance is adjustable between 50 Ω and 75 Ω, ensuring compatibility across different load conditions. Weighing 405 g (14.3 oz), the module's dimensions are 21.6 cm × 2.0 cm × 13.0 cm (8.5 in. × 0.8 in. × 5.1 in.).

The NI 780109-01 delivers exceptional signal fidelity with a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of up to 87 dB, contingent on frequency and path selection. An integrated, software-selectable finite impulse response (FIR) filter, with interpolation factors of 2, 4, or 8, enhances sample rate effectiveness and signal quality. The Main path is further complemented by a seven-pole elliptical filter, providing significant image suppression for clean signal output.

Versatile clocking options include a high-resolution mode with a sample rate resolution of 1.06 µHz and the capability for an external clock input of up to 105 MHz. An onboard phase-locked loop (PLL) guarantees precise clock synchronization with external references. Designed to endure demanding environmental conditions, the module operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C and adheres to stringent military and industrial standards for shock and vibration resilience, as well as various safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards.
