The National Instruments 780587-12 (PXIe-2512) is a sophisticated 7-Channel Fault Insertion Unit (FIU) Switch Module designed for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and electronic reliability evaluations. This module allows users to simulate a variety of fault conditions, including opening and shorting connections, and faults related to battery voltages or ground, enabling rigorous validation of control systems, such as engine control units (ECUs) and full authority digital engine controls (FADECs). The 780587-12 supports a maximum switching voltage of 50 VDC or 30 V ACrms, with a maximum continuous current of 10 A per channel. It is capable of handling pulsed currents up to 50 A for a duration of 600 microseconds and can switch power levels of up to 500 W per channel. The module features a typical DC path resistance of 16 mΩ and a maximum of 35 mΩ, alongside a bandwidth exceeding 800 kHz in a 50 Ω configuration.

Enhanced performance characteristics include an overcurrent detection limit of 10.5 A and a detection delay of 20 ms, with a relay operate time of 8 µs (typical) and 35 µs (maximum). Utilizing FET relays for optimal reliability, the unit connects via two DSUB, 8-position, male connectors on the front panel and offers software-selectable output trigger pulse widths from 1 µs to 62 µs.

The 780587-12 operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 50 °C and can be stored at temperatures between -40 °C and 70 °C. It supports a relative humidity range of 5% to 85% (non-condensing) and can function at altitudes up to 2000 meters, with indoor use only. The module integrates seamlessly into PXI systems, requiring 3.3 V at 1.0 W and 5 V at 13.0 W, or for PXI Express, +12 V at 14.7 W and 3.3 V at 1.4 W. Compactly designed, the module measures 21.6 cm × 4.1 cm × 13.0 cm and weighs 403 grams. It complies with various safety and EMC standards, including IEC 61010-1, EN 61010-1, UL 61010-1, CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1, EN 61326-1, CISPR 11, CISPR 22, and FCC Part 15B, ensuring robust operation in demanding environments.
