The National Instruments 780587-14 is a high-performance 7-channel Fault Insertion Unit (FIU) switch module, also identified as the PXIe-2514, specifically designed for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) applications and electronic reliability testing. This module facilitates the simulation of various fault conditions, including open circuits, short circuits between pins, shorts to battery voltages, and shorts to ground, thus enabling thorough validation of critical control systems such as engine control units (ECUs) and full authority digital engine controls (FADECs).

Each channel of the 780587-14 supports a maximum switching voltage of 28 VDC or 19.8 V ACrms, accommodating continuous currents of up to 40 A for single paths and 25 A for multiple closed paths. The module is designed to handle pulsed currents reaching 200 A for brief durations (up to 1100 µs), making it suitable for high-stress testing environments. The maximum switching power per channel is rated at 1,120 W, while built-in safety features include overcurrent detection with a maximum limit of 41 A and a response time of 20 ms, alongside overtemperature protection circuitry to prevent damage during fault conditions.

Dynamic characteristics of the module encompass a typical relay operate time of 8 µs and a maximum of 35 µs, ensuring an unlimited relay lifespan when operated within specified limits. The NI 780587-14 employs FET relays and is equipped with two DSUB connectors on the front panel. It requires a PXI chassis with power specifications of 3.3 V at 1.0 W and 5 V at 13.0 W, or a PXI Express chassis with 12 V at 14.7 W and 3.3 V at 1.4 W. Weighing 513 g (18.1 oz) and measuring 21.6 cm by 4.1 cm by 13.0 cm (8.5 in. x 1.6 in. x 5.1 in.), the module operates in an ambient temperature range of 0 °C to 50 °C and can be stored safely between -40 °C and 70 °C. Additionally, the 780587-14 complies with numerous safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards, including IEC 61010-1, EN 61010-1, UL 61010-1, CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1 for safety, and EN 61326-1, EN 55011, and FCC Part 15B for EMC, ensuring a robust and reliable solution for testing and validation.
