The National Instruments 781639-01 CAN Interface Module is a high-performance, high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) Flexible Data Rate (FD) interface designed to facilitate advanced application development with the NI-XNET driver. Part of the NI-9862 model series, this module is well-suited for various tasks, including rapid control prototyping, automated control, bus monitoring, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and real-time CAN frame and signal manipulation. It allows for low-level FPGA control and embedded monitoring within the NI CompactRIO chassis, ensuring effective collaboration with data-gathering activities across the NI CompactDAQ platform.

Equipped with an ISO 11898-compatible NXP TJA1041AT High-Speed CAN transceiver, the 781639-01 can support baud rates of up to 1 Mbps and is backed by the Bosch DCAN CAN controller, which accommodates both 11-bit and 29-bit identifiers while maintaining compatibility with CAN 2.0B. This module guarantees reliable communication over its single CAN port, optimizing interaction with other connected hardware.

The CAN bus configuration handles bus line voltages between -27 and +40 VDC, while the module’s power supply requirements range from +9 to +30 VDC. In active mode, the module consumes a maximum of 1 W from the chassis and dissipates up to 1.25 W of heat at an ambient temperature of 70 °C. Safety and isolation are critical design elements; the port-to-COM voltage specification adheres to Measurement Category I standards, with the ability to withstand continuous voltages of 60 V DC and 500 V RMS for 5 seconds during dielectric testing. The 781639-01 supports multiple CAN nodes interconnected via a main bus cable, with proper termination required at both ends to mitigate communication errors from signal reflections. This module is a robust solution for users requiring advanced CAN communication capabilities in industrial automation settings.
