The National Instruments SMD-7615 Stepper and Servo Motor Motion Drive Device, identified by part number 783595-01, is designed for precise control of four-lead, six-lead, and eight-lead motors. The six-lead motors can be configured in series or center-tapped, while the eight-lead motors support series or parallel connections. Key features of the SMD-7615 include electronic and anti-resonance damping for enhanced stability at higher speeds, and torque ripple smoothing for improved operation at lower speeds. The device operates with a supply voltage range of 12 to 53 VDC, delivering a drive current from 0.1 A to 5 A.
Digital inputs for step and direction control are optically isolated, compatible with 5V logic, having an internal resistance of 330 Ω, with minimum pulse width and setup time of 0.5 µsec and 2 µsec, respectively. Additional digital inputs also are optically isolated and operate within 12V to 24V logic levels, featuring an internal resistance of 2200 Ω. The analog inputs accept a voltage range of ±10 VDC, with an internal resistance of 100 kΩ. The SMD-7615 includes a photodarlington output rated for a maximum of 30 VDC and 100 mA, in addition to a +5 V output with similar maximum current capabilities. Connectivity is facilitated via a CAT5 Ethernet cable, compatible with a PC's network card, router, or switch, while an integrated 16-position rotary switch allows for easy IP address configuration.
To operate the device, a PC must run Microsoft Windows 8.1/8/7/Vista/XP SP3 and have LabVIEW 2014 or later installed, along with the LabVIEW SoftMotion Module version 2014 f1 or above. The National Instruments Stepper Configuration Utility can be accessed through the NI downloads webpage. With compact dimensions of 1.775 × 3.0 × 5.0 inches and a weight of 10 ounces, the SMD-7615 functions reliably within an operating temperature range of 0 °C to 40 °C. Diagnostic status is indicated through a blinking LED that signals various error conditions.
