The National Instruments PXI-7334 (Part Numbers: 779035-04, 778444-01) is a sophisticated stepper motion controller module designed for precise point-to-point motion applications in industrial automation environments. This module supports comprehensive motion control for up to four independent or coordinated axes, enabling smooth straight-line vector movements even at high velocities. Specifically engineered for stepper motor control in PCI and PXI bus systems, the PXI-7334 excels in delivering accurate motion execution across various automation tasks.

This controller integrates a robust architecture comprising a customized field programmable gate array (FPGA), an Analog Devices ADSP-2185 digital signal processor (DSP), and a Motorola MC68331 real-time 32-bit CPU. This architecture allows for the offloading of complex motion tasks from the host PC, optimizing system performance and enhancing command throughput. The PXI-7334 features dedicated motion I/O for home switch and end-of-travel limit inputs, trigger input, breakpoint output, and encoder feedback at speeds up to 20 MHz. Additionally, it includes non-dedicated user I/O, which encompasses four analog inputs, joystick inputs, and 32 bits of digital I/O for ±10 V signal processing or analog sensor monitoring.

The PXI-7334 accommodates both open and closed-loop operation modes for stepper axes, utilizing quadrature encoders or analog inputs for position and velocity feedback. It offers step/direction or clockwise/counter-clockwise digital outputs and includes shutdown inputs for emergency stops of all axes and command outputs, complemented by a watchdog timer for system reset. The controller’s advanced motion I/O capabilities feature programmable digital I/O ports and encoder inputs with a maximum counting rate of 20 MHz, ensuring flexibility for varied control topologies.

Although the PXI-7334 is no longer manufactured by National Instruments, it remains available for purchase and repair through Apex Waves, supported by user manuals and maintenance documentation. The module operates at a maximum power consumption of 5.7 watts, measures 6.3 x 3.9 inches (16 x 10 cm) without connectors, and weighs 6 ounces (170 grams).
